oops

Cars have gone off the bridge, luckily the 18 wheeler wasn't one of them! I have never driven across the bridge although I have visited the UP when I lived in Duluth. I will make use of the "driver" service at the toll booth. You can hire someone to drive you across the bridge. I am afraid of heights and this sucker is 8 miles long and about 160 above the lake. "Updated: Friday, July 19 2013, 04:56 PM EDT MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It was a wild night on the Mackinac Bridge as strong winds blew over a semi and forced them to shut down the Mighty Mac. That semi flipped on its side and came to rest against the suspension cables that hold up the bridge. Officials say winds were whipping across the bridge at 65 miles per hour Thursday night. It caused them to shut down the bridge for several hours."Read More at:

ETA: that downpour that I bailed out of on Monday caused two 18 wheelers and a bus to crash just down the road. I am glad I got off the highway.

We drove across The Bridge several times, never in high wind. Had a laker sailing underneath once. Also took the ferry across, back in ancient times when The Bridge was under construction. Driving is faster . . .

My problem is a fear of heights. Mackinac is just too high. The George Washington bridge, the bridge on 84 across the Hudson at Newburgh NY and the beautiful new Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston wasn't comfortable to drive on.

The other problem for me is bridges with open steel grate for decking.
