While driving yesterday I made a turn at the end of the street and was startled by a hawk catching lunch. Came down right in front of the car, caught something and headed to a tree to the south clutching something brown & small. It happened so fast and the sun was placed such that I was unable to make an identification. Hope lunch was good.

Could you tell if the bird had pointy wings or rounded? Accipiter versus buteo . . .

Rounded. Light underneath without much patterning and with dark wing tips as seen from underneath. Just a flash of a sighting. I was late getting to school so I didn't stop for a better look.

Possible red-tail? You've had one around before.

I think I would recognize her. She is large, darker and I usually see her a bit west & north of here. There is a national guard armory, a couple of schools and a city golf course. She is usually in and around the edges of these open areas. The one yesterday was smaller & lighter.

I don't think it looked like the one that hunts around my house that I jokingly call the "Christmas Tree Ornament" for his/her favorite perch at the top of a neighbor's spruce tree. This hawk is heavily patterned with long banded tail. (The neighborhood itself is full of large old trees, fairly dense with such. This is not the neighborhood of large expanses of lawn.)
