tornado watch

Mostly red blobs on the weather radar heading our way.

I have been noticing a lot of stressed trees in the neighborhood. Ash that are hit by the ash borer. The city is taking these down as fast as can be. But now a lot of the Norway maples have leaves turning brown and are dropping their leaves.

Our Norway maples are getting hit by "tar spot" fungus -- black spots on the leaves, leaves drop early.

I don't have any maples myself, nor any in close proximity to my house. I will have to actually stop and pick up a leaf and see if this is the problem.

The older street trees are mostly the ones with the problem and haven't been in the best shape since they dug up everything to put new sewers in a few years ago. A majority of the maples on this block died from that trauma (including the one that was in front of my house).

My Hamamelidaceae are happily green. The city replaced most of our block with a good mix of varieties this time. I beat the city and put in my own - parrotia persica.
